WHAT'S YOUR STORY?
"In a nutshell, I’m your not so average small border town kid. In Del Rio, there are no secrets. Everyone knows something about everyone and the same people you went to kindergarten with are the same people walking with you as you get you high school diploma. I grew up as the big shot everyone wanted to befriend. You know that one person at school who was involved with EVERYTHING? Student council, class officers, all the extracurriculars, sports, church, etc., yeah that was me. I was Class President and Most Popular for three years in a row… I made it a point to make friends with essentially every demographic at my school. But while others let that type of fame get to you, I always used it to humble myself. “People are watching. Set an example, let them see what good this kind of ‘power’ can cause.” This is something I carry with me even to this day. I moved to Austin in 2009 and man, was I in for a culture shock. I entered this next phase of my life with the utmost confidence and it was very VERY quickly that I had to check myself. Austin was a lot, even for Mr. Del Rio Class President Three Years in a Row. Interestingly enough, while I had my fair share of troubles which gave me major tests from life, I always get centered by reminding myself, “dude, you’re still that guy from Del Rio. At the end of the day, your heart gets its power from your upbringing at home. You’ve got a long way to go.” I graduated college and started working as a producer/editor. Still going strong for four years. But that’s my story for now. Still writing the rest of it..."
WHAT'S YOUR PURPOSE?
"For a long time, my purpose was to “be successful.” Pretty typical, right? That’s been the goal for a while, but more recently I’ve been starting to think my purpose is much more than just gaining success. Yes, I still want to be successful, but I think my real purpose is to entertain. I love being creative. It’s a facet of my life that always brings me joy. I’m still figuring out just how to embrace this and turn it into success, but the way I am figuring it out is by not being so afraid anymore. I’ve always feared messing up or letting people down, but I can’t do just that anymore. I have to do it for me too. And why should I be afraid of myself? Lately, I’ve been telling myself to just go for it. Embrace the dark and create light. Do it for you, but do it smart."
WHAT'S THE BIGGEST HARDSHIP YOU'VE FACED?
"That would have to be depression. I had a really trying time in college. I started to wonder if being there was the right thing to do. However, certain things aided this mindset. One of my dearest childhood friends passed away. I was doing so poorly in school I was put on academic probation. I struggled with the fact that I was out yet and was afraid to tell people. All this within one year. With all those things, the monster of depression was born. I have since learned to control it as best I can but unfortunately those who are susceptible to it will always have it linger in the back of their mind."
WHAT'S YOUR CONSTANT MOTIVATION & WHERE DOES IT ROOT FROM?
"Home. Home is where my family is. Home is where I grew up. Home is where I gained the foundation to the person I am today. Home motivates me because it’s my constant reminder that your limitations do not define you. Back home there are fewer opportunities to advance when compared to other places, but I never let that stop me. If anything I am thankful for that. It forced me to go out and pursue my dreams. But above all, home makes me happy. And happiness is the best motivation I could ever ask for."
WHAT'S SOMETHING THAT SOMEONE WOULDN'T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
"I love to bake. I got inspired to make a pie when my tia, you know, that one tia that always makes the desserts for every holiday, wasn’t going to be at the family dinner for Thanksgiving. I took it upon myself to make the pies and BOOM, a closeted baker emerged. I make a pretty killer coconut cream pie..."
